Hoy se simplemente 81 años desde que el Presidente Juan Antonio Ríos reconoció la importancia de la Educación Técnica en el desarrollo productivo del país, a través de la creación de la Dirección General de Enseñanza Profesional, lo que ocurrió el 26 de agosto de 1942. Luego, en 1947 se fundó la Universidad Técnica del Estado (actual USACH), que agrupó la formación técnica antes ofrecida por las escuelas de Artes y Oficios.
En 1965, el Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva restructuró el sistema educativo; junto a los 8 años de Educación Básica, creó la Educación Media Técnico-Profesional. En los 5 años posteriores se crearon las primeras instituciones de Educación Superior Técnico-Profesional: el Instituto Nacional de Capacitación (INACAP) y la Dirección Universitaria Obrera y Campesina de la Universidad Católica (DUOC UC).
